Overview
Roads and Solid Waste (a.k.a. The Dump) are two of the most utilized services the Borough provides. While both are provided borough-wide, there are significant differences in HOW they operate.
The KPB Road Service Area operations are administered by a small team consisting of the Roads Director, two Admin Assistants and five Road Inspectors, under the oversight of the Road Service Area Board. All road maintenance work is performed by local contractors selected through a competitive bidding process. The Road Service Area operates under the principle that the private sector is best suited to provide these borough-wide services. The Road Service Area team ensures that these contractors' work is cost effective, and that it meets the public's expectations.
Solid Waste is operated with mix of contracted hauling and transfer sites, and the KPB operated Central Peninsula Landfill (CPL). The Seward Monofill/Transfer site provides on-site of suitable materials, as well as transfer of waste to CPL. All other communities are served by transfer sites, with waste hauled by private sector contractors to the Central Peninsula Landfill.
