The Kenai Peninsula Borough, Office of Emergency Management is offering ICS-300 training, Intermediate Incident Command System for Expanding Incidents for Operational First Responders. This course provides in-depth training for people serving as command staff, section chiefs, strike team leaders, task force leaders, unit leaders, division/group supervisors, and multi-agency coordination system/emergency operations center staff.
The class will be held November 30 - December 2, 2016 from 8:30am to 5:00pm at the KPB Emergency Operations Center, 253 Wilson Lane in Soldotna. There is no cost to attend the class, however costs for travel and per diem are the responsibility of the individual or sponsoring organization.
All participants must have the following pre-requisite courses completed at registration and must submit them with the application form. All courses can be accessed at the FEMA Independent Study website.
IS-100.b: Introduction to Incident Command System
IS-200.b: ICS for Single Resources and Initial Action Incidents
IS-700.a: National Incident Management System (NIMS) An Introduction

The next scheduled ICS class is ICS-400 offered January 16 - 17, 2017. Registration for that session will be available in November.
The Kenai Peninsula Borough Office of Emergency Management is pleased to present a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) class in Homer.
The location of the classes will be announced at a later time. There is no cost or obligation for the course, however space is limited and minimum enrollments are required in order to conduct the course.
All materials will be provided, and the course is ability oriented meaning people of all skill levels and physical abilities are welcome.

The Pollard subdivision and Funny River Road area (Milepost 7 to the end, including Salmon Run Drive vicinity) have evacuation advisories in effect. This advisory is due to erratic fire behavior conditions that may trigger an evacuation notice or order within the next 12 to 24 hours.
5/25/14: The advisories continue to be in effect.
There is no evacuation order at this time, only an advisory to be prepared.
If conditions change, an order to evacuate will be announced and instructions provided of where to go, or the warning will be canceled.
Please be prepared to leave immediately in the event an evacuation is initiated.
Residents should prepare now by having essential supplies such as medication and important papers, provisions for pets, and a plan for alternate shelter.
In accordance with the direction of the 2003 Healthy Forest Restoration Act, the Kenai Peninsula Interagency All Lands / All Hands Action Plan places a priority on working collaboratively with communities in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) and emphasizes the need for the communities on the Kenai Peninsula to complete Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPPs). These CWPPs give local community members an opportunity to consider WUI boundaries around their community for themselves, identify and prioritize hazard fuel reduction projects, and to recommend measures to reduce the ignitability of structures throughout the at-risk community.
A CWPP helps a community develop, clarify and refine its priorities for protection of life and property and critical infrastructure in the wildland urban interface. The CWPP brings together diverse local interests with a large base of knowledge to discuss their mutual concerns for public safety, community sustainability and natural resources. It offers a positive, solution-oriented environment in which to address challenges such as: local firefighting capability, the need for defensible space around homes and subdivisions, and where and how to prioritize land management - on both federal and non-federal land.
A CWPP can be used by FireWise program working groups, individual homeowners, fire departments, fire management personnel in natural resource agencies, and others involved in wildfire planning and mitigation efforts. Guidelines for the creation of a CWPP are outlined in Preparing a Community Wildfire Protection Plan: A Handbook for Wildland-Urban Interface Communities.
